North Carolina Racial Equity Project

DEI Committee for North Carolina Community Colleges

In July 2020, former North Carolina Community College System President Peter Hans appointed presidents Thomas Walker and Don Tomas to lead an Advisory Council to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The committee was charged with reviewing the State Board Code and sample college policies for elements that may negatively impact students of color and make recommendations on how to address inequities.

In addition, the committee is tasked with developing guidelines for colleges to use to examine their own policies.

The Advisory Council selected Jobs for the Future, with their partners at ASA Research and the Belk Center, to support the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) in this critical work. Under the direction of David Alstadt, the JFF project team will complete the following tasks:

  • State Board policy review
  • Review of sample college policies
  • Conduct focus groups and interviews to identify equity barriers and institutional readiness
  • Develop guidelines for colleges to examine their own policies

The Belk Center team, including staff and research associates, will contribute to the policy review and curation of the guidebook and provide feedback to the project team on research elements. Dr. Jemilia Davis will coordinate this work at the Belk Center. Deliverables are expected at the end of July 2021.
